From Pueblo Indian Trails to El Camino Real to the Santa Fe Trail, Santa Fe has been a sought after destination for centuries. Global Running Culture, a non-profit organization, is proud to present the third running of the Santa Fe to Buffalo Thunder Half Marathon, a unique athletic and cultural event.
Starting in the heart of Santa Fe at historic Fort Marcy, the point-to-point course follows the Old Taos Highway, finishing at the magnificent Buffalo Thunder Resort & Casino within the Pueblo of Pojoaque. The 1,000 foot net downhill USATF-certified course (including 300 feet of uphill) features spectacular views of the Sangre de Cristo and Jemez mountains while dropping into the colorful Rio Grande Valley. Inspired by live music along the course, runners will pass the Santa Fe Opera, the Village of Tesuque, Camel Rock, and through the Tesuque Pueblo on the way to Pojoaque along a route that our ancestors have run and walked for centuries.
For those desiring a shorter challenge, a 5K Run and a 1 mile Fitness Walk will take place at Buffalo Thunder, timed so participants will complete their events and be able to welcome half marathoners to the finish line.
Running is an integral part of many cultures, including that of Native Americans, Tarahumara of Copper Canyon Mexico, and the people of Kenya, all of which are represented at our race. The Santa Fe to Buffalo Thunder Half Marathon is more than a race, however, it is also a celebration of our shared running culture.
On Saturday, the Global Running Festival will be held at Fort Marcy Park, featuring the third running of the Global Footprints Youth Relay. Three groups of runners from throughout northern New Mexico will achieve the most miles possible within the allotted time. The race expo, international arts & crafts, and world music will round out the festival and inspire the relay runners to do their best.
Race proceeds benefit Global Running Cultures programs dedicated to bettering the lives of our next generation through the power of sports, including the Global Footprints Project Kenya , Project Copper Canyon and Project New Mexico initiatives.
