2014 XTERRA Curt Gowdy Off Road Triathlon:

In 2009 Wyoming built a trail system designed with one thing in mind: a world class mountain biking destination for pro's and weekend beginners. In 2014 we're proud to host one of the hottest XTERRA in the country at Curt Gowdy State Park, a destination soon to be known as the next "Moab".  IMBA designated Curt Gowdy with it's EPIC award, granted to only 50 trail systems world wide, and on of only two XTERRA's to take place on an IMBA Epic Trail System (XTERRA Buffalo Creek is the second). Please register early as we sold out in 2013 on April 10th!

The XTERRA Curt Gowdy Triathlon features a 1200m swim in the clear waters of Granite Reservoir.  Then it's on to a 1-Lap 14.1 mile single-track bike over every type of terrain imaginable.  You'll climb through aspen groves, zip through open meadows, navigate narrow evergreen trees, and even traverse over slick rock!  The 5.4m run will cover many of the same single track trails before you finish at the Aspen Grove Trailhead.  The park has RV and tent sites within 200m of the transition area!

"Wyoming built a playground for mountain bikers, and built it around two pristine reservoirs.  Between the trail system and camping you couldn't dream up a more perfect XTERRA Venue."  - Mike Rutter, seasoned XTERRA athlete and trail builder for Boulder County

Course Information:

XTERRA CURT GOWDY SWIM COURSE (1200 meters):

The swim course for the XTERRA Curt Gowdy Triathlon will take place in Granite Springs Reservoir, offering sweeping views of the surrounding hillsides.  Water temp ranges from 64-67 degrees

Swim Set-up: The swim course is a traditional 2-loop (600m/lap) XTERRA Swim.  After lap one you'll exit on the beach for a short 50m run before entering on lap #2!  Open water swimming is only allowed 2x/season at Granite Springs, the water will be crystal clear.  You'll be ranked by swim and mountain bike ability to help group you will similar ability levels out on the course

XTERRA CURT GOWDY BIKE COURSE (14.1 Miles): This bike course offers every terrain imaginable!  After leaving the transition area you'll head down the road for .75 miles before hitting the single-track.  For the next 13.5 miles you'll wind your way through the parks network of "Green - beginner, Blue - Intermediate, and Red - advanced" trails.  The best part of the trail design is that every short red section requiring some advanced skills only requires a 10sec jaunt to move past, no hike-a-bikes, every trail flows exceptionally well.  We've designed a course that rolls with the terrain so you'll never face a monster ascent, but a series of 3-4 climbs spread throughout the first 10 miles.  The last 4 miles you'll fly through open meadows as you hug the edge of the lake, very similar to XTERRA Lory.  We'll have 1x aid station at the half way point of the bike to re-stock you with Gatorade, Water, and GU.  Due to the extremely well designed, flowing, and maintained trail system we classify this course as intermediate, but one that will challenge all levels from beginners to experts in various ways.  For the mountain biking lover this is a can't miss event!  Pre-riding is encouraged for all levels.

IMBA EPIC Trail System: The International Mountain Bike Association awarded the Curt Gowdy trail system an Epic designation in 2009. This is currently the first and only Epic designation by IMBA in the state of Wyoming. According to IMBA, an Epic designation means the trail system provides a quality ride and quality experience for the user.

XTERRA CURT GOWDY RUN COURSE (5.3 Miles):  The run for the XTERRA Curt Gowdy Triathlon will take place on many of the same trials featured on the mountain bike course.  The 5.3m run will leave transition just like the mountain bike portion, but instead of cruising down the road you'll immediately hit single-track.  The first half of the run will take you on the mountain bike trails system before diverting down Stone Temple Circuit.

We'll have 3x aid stations along the way to keep you fueled up with water, gatorade, and GU.  The aid stations are located at the 3/4 mile mark, 2.3 mile mark, and 4 mile mark.  Expect flat terrain for the first mile, then a series of rolling climbs as you enter the evergreen forests.  The entire run takes place under shaded trees.  The varied terrain and changing scenery makes this 5.3 mile run very entertaining!

Transition Area located at South Causeway: Without Limits triathlon staging areas are set up to ensure the safety and privacy of the racers and the security of their equipment. Please follow these guidelines: The Transition Area Opens at 6:15 am.  Race staff will close the transition area 15 minutes prior to the start of the 1st wave (7:45AM).  All Athletes must be out of the T/A by this time. Please Gauge your time accordingly! The transition area is strictly limited to racers only No family members, friends or coaches inside transition.
