The races will be held at the Ole Swimming Hole, a public swimming area maintained by the Dare County Parks and Recreation, outside Manteo, N.C. in the Croatan Sound. This area is not open to the ocean, and not affected by ocean tides or ocean waves. This swimming location is more comparable to an open lake swim. There may be some small waves depending on the direction of the wind. The start and finish will be from a sandy beach area. The course for the 1 kilometer and 2 kilometer swims will be a 1-kilometer triangle-shaped course approximately 350 meters by 300 meters by 350 meters. The course for the 500 meter swim will be a shorter triangle-shaped course approximately 200 meters by 100 meters by 200 meters. This swimming location is very safe and has been used for the swim leg, and transition area for the Outer Banks triathlons for many years.

Safety for the event will be provided by ocean lifeguards from the lifeguard companies serving Corolla, Southern Shores, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head with assistance from the N. C. Wildlife Resources Commission, the N.C. Marine Fisheries.
