This is not your ordinary 5K walk, just as Kirby McRill was not your ordinary long-distance walker. Kirby was eccentric and so this walk... well you get the point. Let's just say it'll be fun. Check out our website for more details.

In 1922 some civic boosters entered Kirby in a walking race against George M. Brown, the World Walk King. The race took place over a three-mile course through the downtown streets of Kansas City, Missouri. Public officials lined up at the starting line. Crowds of onlookers gathered at the finish line. The masses cheered Kirby as he crossed the finish line first. But, then, much to the crowd's dismay, Kirby was disqualified on a technicality. You see, Kirby had trotted while his opponent walked. During the race, a spectator had yelled, "Kirby my man, you're running! You're running!" Kirby had replied, " I can't help it, I can't let him get ahead of me."

Don't be disqualified as Kirby was. WALKING ONLY! No running, no jogging, no trotting, no cantering, not even any skipping.

Course Information:

The walk will take place along the newly constructed Chieftain Trail Phase II in Beautiful Tonganoxie, Kansas. The end stretch will wind through historica downtown Tonganoxie ending at Flashback's Cafe for awards, prizes, celebrating and fun.

Directions:

From Kansas City take I-70/I-670 West. Take the Take the KS-7/US-73/US-24/US-40 exit,EXIT 224, North 1.4 miles towards Leavenwroth. Take the State Avenue Exit west towards Basehor/Tonganoxie, 10.6 miles. Welcome to Tonganoxie.

From Lawrence take I-70 East to the Tonganoxie/Eudora Exit 212 (about 8 miles). Take 222nd street north 1.5 miles to US 24-40 Hwy. Go East .5 miles. Welcome to Tonganoxie.
