The Fourth Street Clinic Triathlon & 5k is an annual community event organized by medical and healthcare student volunteers from the University of Utah. The primary goals of the event are to:

  • Meet a portion of the Clinics financial needs
  • Promote the Clinics mission and patient programs
  • Emphasize the need for healthy habits and healthcare access throughout the community

Course Information:

The triathlon and 5k will be held on the University of Utah campus in the courtyard between the HPER Natatorium and the Huntsman Center (registration & check-in, start/finish line, transition zone, sponsor booths, fuel station, and all other hubbub will be found here). Use the Huntsman Center parking lot directly east of where we will be set up for free parking (refer to the red highlighted parking lot in the map for directions).

300m Swim Course

The first leg of the triathlon will begin in the HPER Natatorium/Swimming Pool. The swim course snakes its way through six 25-yard lanes (or 12 laps), totaling approximately 300 meters (about 1000 ft or 0.2 mi). Participants will be grouped by their estimated swim time into one of three heats (see below) and separated by gender into two pools. This system allows swimmers of a similar ability to be in the water at the same time (start times are approximate).

  • 1st Heat (Faster) 9:00 am
  • 2nd Heat (Medium) 9:15 am
  • 3rd Heat (Slower) 9:30 am

8k Mountain Bike Course

The second leg of the triathlon will be the mountain bike course in the lower foothills, East of the University of Utah along the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, with an exact distance of 8.5 km (5.28 mi). Following the swim, triathletes can gear-up and grab their bike in the Transition Zone (Please do NOT ride in this area). In sections of the course with two-way traffic, please stay to the right side of the sidewalk/road/trail as much as possible and watch for on-coming cyclists or runners. Some of the course is on public sidewalks and roads. The path will remain open to other recreational users, so please be alert and courteous. Volunteers in yellow shirts are stationed throughout the course to assist riders. Althought the entire bike section of the triathlon is short, it includes many challenges and natural obstacles such as loose dirt/rocks or mud, single-track paths, and difficult ascents and descents. Be mindful of your ability level and dismount and walk when needed, while allowing other riders to pass. The course will be as clearly identified as possible please remain on the marked portions of the trail.

5k Run Course

The third and final leg of the triathlon is the run, which is the same for both the Triathlon and the 5k, with an exact distance of 5.02 km (3.12 mi). It travels in a counter-clockwise direction around the perimeter of the University of Utah, beginning and ending at the Jon Huntsman Center. Portions of the course are adjacent to or cross-over public roads which may not be entirely closed off, so please exercise caution and be considerate of other pedestrians. Volunteers will be stationed along the course at water stations and elsewhere. The course will be marked as clearly as possible, with minor alterations occurring at our discretion.
